In this article I explain how to be successful at Twitch tabbing. I have bought together several weeks of research to help you support your favourite streamers on and offline.
What Is Twitch Tabbing?
Twitch tabbing in a nutshell, you keep a tab open for your favourite streamer showing their streaming page. This in theory when they are streaming you are still supporting them when you can’t be there or are busy working on something else.
But in Twitch if the sternest is not online when you open the tab, the stream will not automatically show when they do go online.
Easy Twitch Tabbing Steps
Over the last few weeks I have been testing out tabbing techniques to get the best experience for you the viewer and also the streamer.
Below are the steps which I discovered help support your favourite streamer.
1. Open your tab capable browser like Chrome, Safari or Firefox.
2. Navigate to your streamers page.
3. Make sure the stream volume is up a little and not muted.
**Update 20/07/2020 thanks to additional information from @SealedGnu, @TheRaginWarrior and @G1gabitGaming you can use the ‘mute tab’ functionality in your browser to successfully mute the stream without loosing the view/lurk.
This option is built in to most browsers except Chrome, you can however obtain an extension for Chrome called Mute Tab (download here).
On most browsers you just need to right click the tab to select mute, however with Safari you need to click the little speaker symbol in the smart url bar, more info available here.
4. If they are streaming enjoy! If not click the ‘chat’ link. This will load up the stream with chat. So when they go online their stream will start automatically.
Twitch Tabbing Limitations
As with most things there are some limitations that as of yet I have not found a solution for.
Firstly tabbing sometimes does not work if the streamer is hosting another streamer when they go live.
Secondly you will not be earning channel points (if the streamer is partnered). You will also miss out on the periodic bonus points.
Lastly if you open too many tabs this seems to have a negative impact on Twitch and views don’t count. It can also impact your pc speed and resource usage.
I have yet to find solutions to this but will give updates if I do find any. If you know of a solution please let me know in the comments below.
Terms Of Service
I have been through Twitch’s terms and cannot find anything prohibiting this method of viewing a streamer. I suppose you are classed as being there and you can simply have a tab open for someone even when you are doing something else. Or you could be just listening to the stream.
You should always check out Twitch terms before implementing any idea or using any Third party services. You can view the terms pages by clicking here.
**They do prohibit lurk4lurk, host4host, follow4follow etc.**
