This is just a quick update to explain why there have been no posts recently. I try to post at least once per week. However, anxiety has been kicking my butt recently so many things were placed on hold until it cleared a little.
Fortunately, it is now dissipating so here is a quick update on some things that have happened over the last week or so.
Streaming Station / Graphic Power House
I have taken several steps to upgrade my new iMac to create a top class stream machine and graphic power house. The primary focus was to stream from my console and provide good scalable quality output.
Firstly I upgraded my mac to 32gb memory, that in itself is not for the fainthearted. For some reason Apple doesn’t give you access to the ram on the 2019 21″ iMac, you literally have to take off the glass screen and take all, and I mean all of the guts out.
Of course, the correct route is to send it to an approved Apple service centre, but this will cost you a great deal and it comes in at almost a third of the price of a new Mac.
I went down the DIY with the possibility of destroying my new mac route. But there is one video I watched over and over before I began. You can view this OCW video here.
The memory upgrade took me around 30 minutes to complete and I managed it without destroying anything. I even managed to stick the screen back on straight.
So memory upgraded I moved on to the next upgrade.
eGPU – External Graphic Processing Unit
This became a lot more complex than I expected. Apple will only work with certain eGPU combinations, so I needed to work within those constraints. You can read the currently recommended combinations over on Apple’s support site here.
I was initially thinking of the Razer Core X combined with the AMD Radeon 5700 XT but after reading some rather disappointing reviews I decided to plump for the Radeon Vega 64.
After all, that kit arrived to set up was a breeze. You literally pull out the Core X draw insert the card, connect your Thunderbolt 3 and you’re off.
When you set a program to use the external eGPU the difference is amazing. Super fast and so far I have been unable to make it get stressed.
I have run a 4k video on a large screen, a game with graphics maxed out and had a YouTube video playing on the third screen. It had no lag at all and it was perfect. The Vega 64 did not even break a sweat, the fans remained off.
This combination is primarily aimed at streaming especially when used with the Avermedia capture box. But it also lends itself nicely to my creative side, making art and graphics is so much better with the boosts I have available.
And of course, it boosts the macs gaming power too, playing WoW at ultra level is pretty special.
The Vega 64 card is an oldy but is certainly able to hold its own.
I will add links to equipment I am now using in the link section to the right of this page.
Now everything is up and running I do hope to get back into my streaming schedule. I can capture and stream at high quality that pleases me, so hopefully, over the coming days, I can move on from my dark patch and regain confidence.
